World taxi prices: What a 3-kilometer ride costs in 72 big cities
http://www.priceoftravel.com/555/world-taxi-prices-what
-a-3-kilometer-ride-costs-in-72-big-cities/
Here at Price of Travel we are now tracking travel prices in over 100 different cities around the world, hoping to help travelers make an accurate budget as well as pick places where their money goes furthest. Not surprisingly, transportation prices can vary dramatically, so we are tracking the cost of getting to and from the airport and getting around town, using taxis as well as public transportation.
In general, taxi prices can be very confusing in any given city, so trying to compare all the cities together was complicated. To do this we decided to track a typical price range of a 3-kilometer (about 2 mile) trip in each destination. We use price ranges instead of “average” prices because many cities have different prices with each company, or different price structures at night or on weekends.
So the prices below run from cheapest to most expensive, and some of the results are surprising. With the exception of the junker taxis used in India and the Mercedes taxis used in parts of Europe, the cars themselves tend to be very similar. For example, taxis in Bangkok are almost all late-model Toyota Camrys with air-conditioning, and yet the ride costs almost nothing compared to the most expensive cities.

Cab drivers do an essential and sometimes dangerous job, and many of them are struggling financially
10/10/2010
Some have been forced to take second jobs to support their families, while others have taken up gambling or drinking, or have resorted to cheating their customers or coercing them into paying more money just to make ends meet. This is reflected by the increasing number of calls from unhappy passengers to the complaints call centre at the Department of Land Transport (DLT). Between January and August this year, the centre received 9,479 complaints from the public. Of those, 2,060 were about the refusal by taxi drivers to pick up customers; 1,633 were for offensive behaviour; 1,486 for unusually high charges; and 1,182 for not driving to the correct destination.

Council approves Taxi reforms
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 16 2010
Alexandria's taxi industry has a slew of new rules to work with, but a controversial proposal to the city's taxi cab ordinance regulating driver behavior isn't one of them. A requirement for cabs to accept credit cards as well as cash also fell by the wayside, despite support from Hughes. The city isn't in the business of micromanaging private companies, said Vice Mayor Kerry Donley. He likened it to the governor's proposal to privatize the liquor industry.
“We shouldn't be in the business of telling a particular class of businesses you have to accept credit cards,” Donley said. “I think this is a reach... We don't regulate other businesses this way.”

Minister wants to extend deadline for mandatory cab shields
10/22/201
Transportation Minister Steve Ashton said he’s asked the province’s Taxicab Board to look at extending a looming deadline making it mandatory for taxi owners to install new safety shields, after the city’s largest cab company refused to buy in over design concerns. Winnipeg taxi owners have been given until Nov. 1 to install new shields aimed at better protecting drivers. It’s been a rough year for city cabbies, who’ve suffered stabbings, beatings, pepper sprayings and physical assaults on the job. Drivers have two choices: a full shield that divides the front and back of the taxi, and an "L" shield that encloses the driver’s seat.
But Unicity Taxi board president Gurmail Mangat said both options are problematic. Unicity wants more time to consult on a new design, he said, and barring that, the company’s taxis will keep operating without the shields.

Electric taxis will be circulating in Mexico City from April next year, says Marcelo Ebrard, the capital’s mayor. His original aim was to have 20 to 25 of the battery-powered vehicles in operation by March 2010. Although the project has been delayed by more than a year, Ebrard says many more taxis will hit the streets next year than planned at first.

Taxi franchise system renewed by City Council for five years
October 26, 2010
The Los Angeles City Council on Tuesday renewed for five years a controversial taxi franchise system in a move lauded by supporters as an environmental breakthrough and assailed by critics as a sellout to a wealthy industry.
The renewal plan has proved an extremely contentious issue, filling the council chambers three times in recent weeks with advocates on both sides of the issue. The current process regulating the city taxi fleet has been in place for a decade but expires on Dec. 31. The major point of contention was for how long the current system should be renewed. There was general agreement on the need to move to a “greener” fleet of cabs.

Abu Dhabi taxi drivers win pay reprieve
Nov 2, 2010
ABU DHABI // A four-hour protest by about 500 taxi drivers yesterday won them a reprieve from contracts they say would dramatically cut their income. Last June, TransAD announced a unified contract for drivers with all seven of the emirate's taxi firms. It entitled them to a basic salary of Dh800, paid leave, accommodation outside the city and a different commission structure. But drivers at Emirates Taxi feared it would leave them out of pocket. Akter Uddin, a Bangladeshi driver for Emirates Taxi, said the drivers at his company were asked to sign the new contract last month, but none did. He said it would have cut his pay from Dh4,000 a month to about Dh1,500.

Controversial Taxi Franchise Selection Goes Before Council
Nov 8, 2010
The council last year adopted the franchise system to reduce the number of Downtown taxis to a maximum of 250. Santa Monica has 44 companies operating in the city with a total of more than 460 vehicles. Many people, including City officials, say this is too many, and it creates congestion, pollution from idle vehicles and other problems. Thirteen companies applied for franchises, and City staff recommended five for a fleet of 50 cabs each following a lengthy evaluation process.

Toronto stumped on how to fix high taxi rates
Published Monday, Nov. 08, 2010
The mantra of respect for taxpayers that dominated the recent mayoralty campaign does not appear to include a similar focus on the pocketbooks of taxi passengers in Toronto.
Taxi rates are among the highest in the country after another price increase earlier this year with the imposition of the HST on cab fares. The city ranked 20th highest in the world – more expensive than such cities as New York, Paris and Los Angeles, in a recent survey conducted by the website priceoftravel.com. A five-kilometre fare, without additional costs tacked on as a result of waiting time in heavy traffic, costs nearly $13 in Toronto.

Disability community outraged over Taxi of Tomorrow selections
November 16th, 2010
The city’s Taxi of Tomorrow announcement largely ignores the transportation needs of people who use wheelchairs, disability advocates said today. Only one of the three vehicles announced as a finalist in the Taxi of Tomorrow program is accessible to persons with mobility aides, according to the Taxi and Limousine Commission. The announcement brought ire from disability advocates, already upset that only 240 out of more than 13,000 city taxis have can accommodate a passenger using a wheelchair.

Ministry rewriting taxi regulations to encourage pooling
Mon, Nov 22, 2010
Taxi pooling could save passengers money after the Ministry of Transportation and Communications completes an amendment to taxi regulations next year. Chen Yen-po (???), director-general of the Department of Railways and Highways, yesterday said that the ministry was working on the principles governing how different taxi-pool rates will be calculated — including how each passenger should be charged when there are two, three or four passengers in a cab — in the amendment. The amendment could also require that cabs offering carpool services identify themselves with special signs.

Hotel doormen face 25 charges in extortion case
December 7, 2010
Six men arrested last month after an investigation into allegations that doormen at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel were shaking down taxi drivers in exchange for prized fares have learned they face a total of 25 criminal charges. The men were arrested on Nov. 16. An indictment filed recently in Montreal alleges all six men took part in a general conspiracy to extort money from taxi drivers.
The indictment alleges that a total of nine cabbies were victims of extortion, including five who told investigators they made payments to the hotel doormen for five years. According to Montreal police, the payments ranged from $5 to $30, depending on the length of a ride. The taxi drivers told investigators that if they didn’t pay, the doormen would simply direct potential customers to cabbies who would. The investigation began in March after several taxi drivers signed a petition and filed a complaint to the Bureau du taxi et du remorquage, a city-run department that oversees cabs and tow trucks.

Need a Taxi? Drivers Want To Expand Demand for Cabs
08/20/10
They're usually considered either a luxury or a necessary evil belonging to America's older and larger cities, where traffic is insane and parking nonexistent. But some observers believe taxi cabs could become an important and much more visible part of the U.S. transportation landscape in the near future. The growth of the taxi industry, however, isn't anticipated by everyone. A group of veteran taxi drivers in Denver, who have worked for several of the city's established cab services, now want to start their own company. But the proposed, employee-owned company, Mile High Cab, recently had its application rejected by Colorado's Public Utilities Commission, which oversees the state's taxi industry.
